Negotiation Tracker

What changes are parties pursuing to Cali Fund agreements?

Overview

As holder of the COP16 Presidency, Colombia regards the multilateral mechanism and the Cali Fund as a legacy of the Cali COP and has championed their operationalisation; the COP16 President described contributions as fair payment for the use of biodiversity rather than charity. Colombia is a member of the Friends of the Cali Fund and at SBI-7 called for trust and collaboration between governments and the private sector, supported by incentives, and highlighted the role of non-state actors. In the negotiations it has also sought recognition of Afro-descendant communities alongside Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Goals

- Deliver tangible benefits from the Cali Fund as the legacy of COP16

- Build trust and incentives to bring the private sector into the Fund

- Secure recognition of Afro-descendant communities alongside Indigenous peoples and local communities
