What changes are parties pursuing to Cali Fund agreements?

Overview

Chile supports the multilateral mechanism and the Cali Fund, and co-launched the Friends of the Cali Fund with the United Kingdom in June 2025 to strengthen government-business engagement. At COP16 it supported adoption of Decision 16/2, describing the mechanism as one that can be improved over time. During the Open-ended Working Group it favoured targeting sectors that highly rely on DSI, with exclusion for sectors that can show they do not. Chile has no specific ABS legislation and is not a Party to the Nagoya Protocol, so it has no national benefit-sharing regime that would compete with the multilateral mechanism.

Goals

- Increase private-sector contributions through the Friends of the Cali Fund

- Focus contributions on sectors that highly rely on DSI

- Improve the mechanism incrementally through review
